in benghazi last week. the nation's counter-terrorism chief telling congress heavily armed extremists saw an opportunity to attack during protests over an anti-muslim film and took it. and the u.s. is looking for links to al qaeda. >> i would say, yes, they were killed in the course of a terrorist attack on our embassy. >> now sources are telling cnn ambassador stevens was worried about his and others safety mentioning a rise in islamic extremism and growing al qaeda presence in libya. he also mentioned being on an al qaeda hit list. john mccain was outraged last night. >> does it make any sense to you the level, or the small level of security he apparently had with him? >> it doesn't make any sense. i'll tell you what else doesn't make any sense is that the white house spokesman, secretary of state and our ambassador to the u.n. stating categorically it was not a terrorist attack when obviously it had all the earmarks of a terrorist attack including rocket propelled grenades and heavy weapons and a very well carried out military operation. >> libyan military officials telling cnn they me

there was no significant or sizable demonstration when the attacks unfolded sometime after 9:35 p.m. in benghazi on 9/11. in simple terms this was not an ongoing demonstration that spiraled out of control. quote, there was no protests and attacks were not spontaneous the intelligence source said. the libyan attack was planned and had nothing to do with the movie. according to fox news's official a u.s. official did not dispute the account and talked about at small demonstration this consulate as how many separated the attack in the even u.s. official could not say adding it part of the investigation. quote, while everything is still under investigation, the available information suggests that the protests in cairo inspired what the attackers decided to do later that night in benghazi. right now this points to a plan that was hatched opportunisticly on that day. while the libyan government as well was senior members of congress briefed on the attack call it terrorism and they say it was premeditated the state department spokeswoman would still not go that far. >> again i'm not going to put labels on t

of what the security was in the consulate in benghazi. whether or not it was accurate. and catherine herridge has published an article in foxnews.com where she outlined all of the attacks leading up to tuesday at that should have been red flags and meant we were beefing up our security on september 11th. >> as a panoply of attacks, june 6th an ied thrown at the perimeter of the consulate in benghazi. on the 11th the british motorcade came under attack by an rpg. on the 18th, attacked and burned the flag and on the 6, even the red cross building was struck. and building toward crescendo which led to the death of the ambassador. and this attack that ended in the death of four americans were repelled by 15 minutes none of who apparently killed. so an armed force comes to the consulate and none of the guards were killed, either means they're in ka hoots or they fled. >> alisyn: why weren't we having warning signs? it was woefully inaccurate and far below the levels you usually see at the embassies. there weren't marines, apparently four video cameras and those were supposed to be working

in benghazi but secretary clinton will give a classified account of the attacks on the u.s. consulate in libya. witnesses tell cbs news that there was never an anti-american protest outside of the consulate. instead they say it came under planned attack. that's in direct contradiction to the administration's account of the incident. it comes at a time when there are calls for more information from capitol hill and complaints that the administration has not been forthright. >> i'm just stunned and appalled that there wasn't better security for all of the american personnel at that consulate given the high threat environment. >> reporter: now, under law state must establish a panel to investigate the attacks, report to congress within 60 days. today secretary of state hillary clinton will outline what she is and is not willing to share. what's clear, charlie is that the public won't get a detailed account of what happened until after the presidential election. >> margaret, brennan thank you. john miller is with us. good morning. who is this man? >> he's a former al qaeda member who was in guanta

of the benghazi incident in which he was deemed by most people, including many on his own side, to have jumped in with a critical statement of the president really without knowing all the facts and turning it into a political football when most people thought that was the wrong thing to do. >> i agree. >> as an american politician at that time. >> absolutely. when our country is attacked in any way, shape or form, we need to pull will together, come together, not separate at that point. i mean, you know what i would do over there? i would do what the pinnacle of the republican party, the hero, whatever of modern day, ronald reagan did. do you recall when back in the '80s the barracks in lebanon was hit and over 200 marines were killed? did ronald reagan go to war? no. he got us the hell out of there. and that's where i stand on this. if these people don't want us over there, let's close our embassies. i stand with ron paul. let's get rid of foreign aid altogether, because, as ron paul put it, the definition of "foreign aid," that's taking from america's poor and giving it to another country's
